The 43rd Annual Grammy Awards, hosted by Jon Stewart, were held on February 21, 2001 at the Staples Center and shown on CBS.

Even the most jaded awards show observer was drawn to this year's Grammy show.  Hopefully they skipped the VH-1/CBS pre-show (3 long hours on VH-1, 1 hour on CBS).  Tony Danza handled his pre-show duties well, but Leah Ramini and Shawnee Smith were simply annoying. As for the show itself, In addition to the much-talked about, much-criticized Elton John/Eminem duet, viewers were treated to a wide array of presenters and performers and most of the glitz and glamour of a major Hollywood event.  Even E! Entertainment Television got in on the action this year, dispatching Joan & Melissa Rivers, music expert David Adelson and Todd Newton to the Red Carpet for their own special two hour pre-show.

Grammy presenters included Tony Bennett, Toni Braxton, Carson Daly, Joni Mitchell, Sisqo, Gloria Estefan, Jenna Elfman, Vince Gill, Mya, Carlos Santana, Melissa Etheridge, Bette Midler, Kid Rock, Jimmy Smits, Lee Ann Womack, Stevie Wonder, Robbie Robertson, Val Kilmer, Heather Locklear, Erykah Badu, Toni Braxton, Andy Garcia, Shakira, Kevin James, Ray Romano, Steven Tyler & Joe Perry

The show was filled with an eclectic mix of performances, including Paul Simon, N Sync, Christina Aguilera, Destiny's Child featuring Beyonce, Eminem & Elton John, Nnenna Freelon w/Take 6, Faith Hill, Madonna, U2, Macy Gray, Brad Paisley & Dolly Parton.

The event was followed by the official post-Grammy celebration where culinary legends from some of Los Angeles' top restaurants were tapped to offer their unique approach on Southern California cuisine at the exclusive event held at the Biltmore Hotel.  Though celebrities were in attendance, the stars of this soirée were the chefs and the special entrees and desserts they invented.

Of course, there were even more after parties for the stars to hit.  EMI-Virgin held a celebration at the historic Hotel Figueroa which was transformed into a Moroccan disco on three levels, complete with incense and scattered cushions.  Warner/Elektra/Atlantic had their fete across the way at the L.A. Center Studios where party-goers included Mark McGrath, Kid Rock, Paul Simon and Lars Ulrich.

If you missed the Grammy broadcast, E! Online has a complete blow-by-blow of the entire evening.  Also, here's are a couple of their Grammy 2001 pictures:

Some columnists speculated that Tony Braxton (pictured above with Eminem) was trying to outdo the low cut Versace stunner Jennifer Lopez wore to the 2000 Grammy Awards.

NO DOUBT's Gwen Stefani glammed up the Grammys in a cherry-colored Dior tulle gown.  Gwen's Marilyn Monroe-ish hairstyle was accomplished by the Vidal Sassoon Beverly Hills salon.
